Valentine, between legend and reality 2017/02/09

Do you celebrate Valentine’s Day? Are you in lover the 365 days of the year?

Many people consider this festivity to be extremely commercial and consumerist, but for others is the opportunity to enjoy a very special moment with their partner

In ancient times Valentine was a patron and bishop of Terni (located in Umbria, in central Italy) where he was born in 175 A.D. There is little information about it but it seems that Valentine was able to perform miracles and that is why he was called to Rome by Craton, the philosopher, who hoped he could cure his son

Valentine promised the boy’s healing if all the family were to convert to Christianity, they did and the boy recovered his health. The bishop’s fame grew to the point where he was secluded to make him deny his faith, in the end he was killed on the 14th of February.

But, what to lovers have to do with all this?

It is said that bishop Valentine gave flowers from his garden to couples that walked in front of his house. One day, a couple wanted to get married with his blessing and thereafter other couples wanted that too, it was like the bishop were to seal their love for eternity

Also Valentine, when he saw two lovers fighting, invited them to hold a rose at the same time until they made up

Other sources say the bishop secretly celebrated a marriage of a pagan and a Christian – remember that in Christianity this was prohibited and persecuted – what eventually decreed the death of the young spouses and himself

Nowadays Valentine’s Day is celebrated practically all over the world… Do you celebrate it?

Whether you do it or not, my advice is to always cultivate love, be it for your boyfriend or girlfriend, your spouse, your children, your friends, your pets ... always keeping the fire of passion that makes us feel alive
