Organize Homework for Vacations 06/09/2016

Aside from the musical hits and hits of the summer … the real torment is homework for vacations!

Hated by the little ones, as teachers consider them necessary, they represent a hard to handle vacation routine.

The order word is organization!

It is expected that the adults can handle the summer hustle by themselves, but for the little ones, the parents must intervene and establish precise rules for studying.

If your child attends primary school, have a general vision on the quantity of summer work and study a trimestral plan: one, two or three pages a day, in order from the most hated subject (so that the idea is forgotten) to the favorite one. Study only in the morning and have fun in the afternoon or vice versa, or in the hottest hours to avoid going outside, according to mom’s, dad’s, grandparents’, babysitters’ schedules or after summer camp etc.…

Every once in a while verify the progress on the performed exercises, to verify if your child knows not just how to follow the given rules, but to also self-empower, respect their duties as a student. Don’t bet with “do your homework!”, but if your child is disinterested today, remind them that tomorrow they will have double time to play. Keep in mind that this is a revision of the already covered subjects that works as a way to maintain the knowledge… children learn and forget very easily…

Don’t reduce yourself to the start of September to do everything in a hurry, or worse, to replace them to ¨hurry¨; they will go to school with their homework and if they get a bad grade, this will work as a lesson and they will learn to their cost that in the future this mustn’t happen.

If, on the other hand, your child has grown up and is in middle school, homework gets harder. In fact, in this age group, the preteen internal conflict already plays a bad role. If we start to force them to study, we lose as parents. Of course, your supervision is always fundamental, but let them do it by themselves. Propose to invite a couple of classmates to discuss what is already been done and even study together; a couple of serious study and productive hours and in the end, a prize: an invitation for dinner with friends, a dip in the pool or a super ice-cream with 3 flavors, whipped cream and coverture. What do you think?

And when is it a full stop on homework? Of course, if mom and dad work all year and only have a couple weeks of summer to their disposal, leave aside the lessons… enjoy your children, play with them, walk and talk…

Other advise that I would give, if the family leaves for vacations, leave the books at home… you already have to think about the luggage, also remind them of their backpack, books, pencil case, notebooks, notes, calculator, pencils, etc. the thing changes if we are talking about long stays. Unfortunately, one most know how to find right balance between chores and vacation pleasures.

Summer is the best season for the pleasure of reading: before leaving make a trip to the library with your child, leaving them free to choose an adequate text for their age group. A fantasy and exciting read, rapidly read the introduction. To read in relaxation moments, a page for the mother, a page for the child.

If, on the other hand, your child is a bit older, the literature professor has surely recommended some books: let them put it in the suitcase, let them use dead time, not to get bored and make their “work”… we know that a good book under the shade is wonderful company!
