Where does the Father’s Day Party come from? 2016/03/17

We celebrate fathers on March 19th, Saint Joseph’s Day, father figure by excellency in the religious catholic tradition.

The tribute to Saint Joseph has been celebrated since the Middle Ages, precisely on the date of the day of his death.

He is the protector to woodworkers, which was his profession, also consider the defender of orphans and the unmarried women and the poor.

The tradition of celebrating the father comes from West Virginia, United states, where in 1907, 361 men who lost their lives in an accident on the Monongah mine were celebrated, 250 of them where family fathers.

In 1966 president Johnson (USA) officially established Father’s Day, to honor the father figure, the third Sunday of June.

Having this celebration arrive to Italy, the most logic thing to do was to transfer the celebration to the 19th of March.

It was even considered a national holiday, while today it is celebrated in a more intimate and private way in our homes. Children make drawings, cards and gifts filled with love and affection as only they can do it.

In Italy, for example, a traditional bread exists for this day: the “zeppole di San Giuseppe”, which are a type of fried or baked doughnuts filled with cream and decorated with a black cherry in the middle: each region has their own recipe, but I guarantee that all of them are delicious!

My best wishes to all fathers!
