Create lanterns for Halloween! (tutorial) 2014/10/29

Hello!

We are a few days away from Halloween and as a tradition, abroad, and also in some corner of Italy, you can see the famous Jack-o’-lanterns.

Now on the Internet there are different types of lanterns, which are different from the classic pumpkin with a candle. For example, we found lanterns made from paper bags or bottles and plastic cups; But one of the most used materials are glass jars we all have at home.

Today I will share with you a last minute decoration for your Halloween parties or to simply put them at the entrance of your house, waiting for the children to trick or treat!

Materials:

  • Glass jars (clean and with no label)
  • Tissue paper in different colors
  • Paper
  • White glue
  • Brush
  • Scissors
  • Cutter
  • Tea lights or LED candles

The first thing to do is to choose the design and colors you want to use. I recommend using up to three colors; on this project I have just used yellow and black. On my first drawing, I created flying bats with the moonlight as the background.

1. Take the tissue paper that will be the backdrop and cut a piece that can cover the jar. Then cut strips of the same size as this piece. To get a more beautiful effect, shred (carefully) some strips instead of cutting them.

2. Take one of the strips and paste it with the help of the brush. Continue until covering the whole jar.

3. Take a piece of paper and draw bats in deferent sizes (or your designs), cut them, remake the design on the tissue paper and cut again.

4. Paste the bats to the jar very carefully. Finally, place a black strip on the upper part of the jar.

Now your lantern is ready and you can insert a tea light or a LED candle.

Happy Halloween!
