How to make a Top-Hat 2016/10/14

Today I will show you how to make an elegant Top-Hat

Materials

• Velvet patterned fabric
• Thread, needle and scissors
• Pins, Important!
• Flexible plastic
• Ribbons, flowers, feathers for decoration

The procedures I have performed were made in a sewing machine, however it can be performed equally sewing by hand with the stitch in the back sight

Print the two patterns

I will refer to the parts of the hat with the following terminology

We cut the pieces according with the diagram and looking after the symmetry of the fabric’s pattern, at least for the lateral band

We cut the indicated number of pieces; one piece for the crown, one for the lateral band and two pieces for the brim. Remember to always attach the pieces with pins, whether for cutting or sewing, this way we will avoid undesirable mistakes

We start by sewing the lateral band in the back side

We leave the lateral band backwards and with pins we place the crown and sew both parts together

From the inferior part of the lateral band we make a simple fold inwards and pass a seam once with the sewing machine. If you are sewing by hand, you can skip this step, but you will need this fold

Now we will work with the brim. We put together both pieces of the brim and sew

Once they are sewed, we attach the pattern to the brim (already without the interior circle) and we cut forming triangular lids which will help us sew this piece to the lateral band, do not cut them. When the opening is complete, you will be able to turn the piece forwards, in the fourth photograph you can notice that I have also made a rounded stitch to mark this circle

We put the lateral band and brim together and start sewing by hand, hiding this seam

This new pattern will be used for cutting the flexible plastic. 

We will insert this piece once we finish the hat. This plastic is firmer than a disposable glass and you can find it in the electronic articles’ packages.

The lining (in beige color) is made the same way as we made the lateral band and the crown, we insert it into the hat and sew it with an invisible mending or a thin nylon thread. Also, I have sewn a hair comb ornament to the base of the hat to hold it to the hair. I think it’s best to use the hair comb as this remains hidden, but you can also attach the hat to a headband

Ribbons, feather and flowers complete the decoration
